Effective Tattoo Ink Removal

PicoWay works by shattering tattoo ink into minuscule particles. The advanced PicoWay technology is highly effective, removing a broad range of ink colors, including difficult-to-remove blue and green ink. PicoWay is a laser with a high peak power and ultra-short pulse durations. It reaches below the surface of the skin to target pigments, such as dark spots or tattoo ink and breaks them down into tiny particles nearly invisible to the naked eye.

How It Works

PicoWay is a picosecond laser that is FDA-cleared for the treatment of acne scars, wrinkles, pigmentation (dark skin spots), and tattoo removal.

By delivering energy in picoseconds (trillionths of a second), the PicoWay laser breaks down pigment into minuscule particles that the body can easily eliminate, all while minimizing damage to surrounding tissue. The result is faster healing times and reduced discomfort compared to traditional laser treatments.

What Happens During the Procedure?

Before the procedure, a numbing agent is applied to the target area. During the treatment, the PicoWay handpiece delivers energy with an extremely precise, high-power laser in extremely short pulses to target ink particles with great impact. These pulses shatter the tattoo ink into minuscule particles. Following the PicoWay treatment, most of the ink particles are removed by the body.

You may be able to see initial improvement as early as after the first treatment. However, multiple treatment sessions are typically needed.

What Makes PicoWay™ Different From Other Treatments?

PicoWay is a picosecond laser with high peak power and ultra-short pulse durations for a photoacoustic rather than a photothermal effect that heats the skin. Patients report high patient satisfaction and low-to-no downtime. PicoWay is FDA-cleared for certain uses: acne scars, wrinkles, dark spots, and tattoo removal. Side effects are typically transient and expected as part of the laser treatment. More common side effects include redness, swelling, pinpoint bleeding, tingling, or purplish spots.

Can I Return to Normal Activities After Treatment?

Those undergoing tattoo removal are likely to experience some pain and discomfort with treatment. Pain is managed using topical or injectable anesthetic as well as cooling measures to make the procedure as comfortable as possible. There is little to no downtime. Most people are able to return to their daily living activities shortly after treatment. You may need a bandage to keep the treatment area dry for a few days following tattoo removal.

How Do I Know if Laser Tattoo Removal Is Right for Me?

A candidate for laser tattoo removal is typically someone who meets the following criteria:

  • Is in good overall health
  • Has expectations that complete removal may require multiple sessions and that some colors
  • may be more difficult to remove
  • Is not pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Has a mature or older tattoo
  • Has stable skin pigmentation, which is less likely to experience adverse effects
  • Does not have skin conditions, such as eczema, psoriasis, or keloid scarring in the treatment area
  • Is committed to follow-up care

Consulting with a qualified APDerm clinician is essential to determine individual suitability for laser tattoo removal.
