Transform Your Skin

At APDerm, we are committed to providing you with the highest quality of care using advanced technology like the CO2 laser. This powerful treatment targets fine lines, wrinkles, sun damage, uneven skin texture, acne scars, traumatic and surgical scars, and baggy eyes. After just one treatment, most patients will see significant results. Because we want you to have a complete understanding of the procedure, expected results, and associated downtime, we recommend a consultation with the physician who will be performing your procedure prior to scheduling.

What Is the CO2 Laser?

A CO2 laser, also known as a carbon dioxide laser, is a highly effective medical device used for various skin treatments, particularly in dermatology and aesthetics. It operates by emitting a concentrated beam of light energy through carbon dioxide gas, which effectively removes the outer layers of damaged skin while stimulating collagen production and promoting the growth of new, healthy skin cells. The CO2 laser can be finely controlled, allowing for precise removal of skin layers with minimal damage to the surrounding tissue. This precision is particularly beneficial for delicate areas like the face.

How It Works

The CO2 laser emits a beam of infrared light at a wavelength of 10,600 nanometers, which is absorbed by water in the skin cells. As the laser light is absorbed, the water in the skin cells heats up and vaporizes, removing the targeted cells.

The controlled injury to the skin triggers a natural healing process, stimulating the production of new collagen and elastin fibers. Over time, the treated area heals with smoother, more even-toned, and rejuvenated skin.

What to Expect From a CO2 Laser Treatment

The CO2 laser procedure is done in the office. It generally takes about one hour to do the entire face and less time if we are focused on specific areas. A topical anesthetic mask is applied to the skin to ensure your comfort. Most patients describe the pain of the procedure as tolerable.

CO2 Laser Aftercare

The skin will appear red and swollen immediately following the procedure. Cool air and/or cool compresses are used immediately afterward, and ointment is then applied to soothe the skin. Our staff will guide you on how to care for your skin during this period of recovery and will teach you how to use our post-procedure kit. The skin will turn brown over 24 to 48 hours and slough over the next four to seven days.

Makeup and sunscreen/moisturizer can then be used. Patients generally return to work in four to seven days. The underlying skin will appear pinker and healthier. This pink appearance usually completely fades in seven to ten days and is easily covered with makeup. Continued improvement in wrinkle correction, skin tightening, and texture from the fractional CO2 laser can be seen even up to two years following the procedure.
