Dr. Gagnon with female patient

If you're curious about cosmetic treatments but have no idea where to start, you're not alone—and you're in the right place. Maybe you've been thinking about Botox®, are wondering what a “chemical peel” really does, or just want your skin to look a little more refreshed. A cosmetic consultation is the perfect first step, even if you don’t have a specific treatment in mind.

Here’s exactly what to expect when you book a cosmetic consultation.

1. You’ll Be Asked About Your Goals

Don’t worry, you’re not expected to come in with a treatment plan. At your consultation, your provider’s job is to guide you based on what you’re hoping to achieve. Are you looking to brighten dull skin? Soften lines? Get rid of stubborn pigment or acne scars?  Even if you just want to “look less tired,” that’s a great starting point.
The provider will likely ask what bothers you most when you look in the mirror or what you’d like to improve. Be honest! There’s no judgment here—just guidance.

2. You’ll Talk About Your Skin and Health History

To keep you safe and ensure any treatments recommended are appropriate, your provider will ask about your medical history, any medications you're taking, past cosmetic treatments, and your current skincare routine. This helps tailor the recommendations to your skin’s unique needs.
Bonus: you might even walk away with some skincare product suggestions that make a real difference.

3. Your Provider Will Do a Skin Assessment

Expect your provider to examine your skin closely—sometimes under bright lights or with special tools—to get a better sense of texture, tone, elasticity, and other factors that influence treatment recommendations. They may also take photos for your chart, so they can track your progress over time (or just help you see how far you’ve come!).

4. You’ll Learn About Your Options

Now comes the fun part: your provider will walk you through treatments that align with your goals and comfort level. This might include in-office treatments like:

  • Neurotoxins (e.g., Botox® or Dysport®)
  • Dermal fillers
  • Chemical peels
  • Microneedling
  • Laser or light therapies
  • Medical-grade facials or skincare products

They’ll explain what each option does, how it works, what kind of downtime (if any) is involved, and what kind of results you can expect. You’ll also get a sense of the cost and how many treatments you might need to get the end result you are looking for.

5. There’s No Pressure

One of the best parts about a cosmetic consultation? You don’t have to make any decisions right away. Think of it as an educational experience—one where you can ask questions, get expert advice, and take the time to consider what feels right for you.

6. You’ll Leave with a Personalized Plan

Even if you’re not ready to book anything on the spot, your provider will likely send you home with a customized plan based on your skin and goals. This might include skincare recommendations, a treatment timeline, or options to consider in the future. Whether you want to start small or go big, they’ll help map it out.

A cosmetic consultation is for anyone—whether you're new to aesthetics or just not sure where to begin. You don’t need to know what you want!
