Despite there being several methods of hair removal available, shaving is still the preferred method for many. This is due to a range of factors, ranging from convenience to affordability. But one of the downsides of this common form of grooming is razor burn, or razor rash. This tends to occur just after shaving and can last for a few days.
Razor burn is caused by the interaction between the hairs, your skin and the blades. When a blade is glided across the skin, it can lead to small tears and inflammation. This can compromise your skin’s protective barrier and lead to dry, itchy, bumpy skin. But, if you shave correctly, you can help to prevent or minimize discomfort afterwards.
While shaving is a convenient method of hair removal, it can come with downsides. One of them is razor burn. Fortunately, there are ways to prevent it and keep your skin happy and healthy. Here are five tips to ensure a smooth shave and keep razor burn at bay. Because, as they say, prevention is better than a cure!
TIP #1 Exfoliate your skin gently before you shave. This will help to dislodge any ingrown hair and remove dead skin and bumps to make for a smoother glide
TIP #2 It’s unrealistic to use a fresh blade for every shave. But make sure the one you use is good-quality, sharp and clean of any debris that could clog the razor. It is not a bad idea to carefully clean the surface of the blade with a swab of rubbing alcohol to kill off any germs that may be brewing due to the razor sitting in a warm, humid enviroment between usage.
TIP #3 Many people think that they need to shave against the hair growth to effectively remove the hair. Shave in the same direction to prevent razor burn.
TIP #4 Shaving can be a time-consuming process and rushing can lead to problems. Take your time and use shaving cream or a good, soapy lather, to soften the hairs for easy shaving.
TIP #5 Got razor burn anyway? Apply aloe gel and hold a cold compress to the area. Follow up with an unscented lotion that hydrates the skin and locks in moisture.
While shaving has been around for centuries, there are now several ways to get rid of unwanted body hair. These include:
Using an epilator, which works by grasping and pulling the hairs out.
