As more people turn to semaglutide-based medications like Ozempic for weight loss, a new side effect has been coined: “Ozempic Face.” While the benefits of these drugs are clear, rapid weight loss in any modality can lead to changes in facial appearance.

What is Ozempic?

Ozempic is a brand name for semaglutide, a drug initially developed to treat type 2 diabetes. It works by stimulating the release of insulin when blood sugar levels are high, helping to manage blood glucose over time. Additionally, it slows down stomach emptying, creating a feeling of fullness that curbs appetite. These effects make it an effective weight loss tool, leading to its approval under the brand name Wegovy for weight management in 2021.

How Does Weight Loss Affect the Face?

Losing a substantial amount of weight, particularly in a short time frame, can have visible effects on the skin. Dropping 35 pounds or more within six months can deplete the body of vital nutrients, affecting skin elasticity and texture. While Ozempic doesn’t directly cause facial fat loss, the overall reduction in body fat leads to thinner skin and less volume in key areas like the cheeks, jawline, and temples.

Subcutaneous fat—the layer of fat just beneath the skin—plays a crucial role in maintaining facial contours and elasticity. When this fat diminishes quickly, the skin may sag and wrinkle, leading to a more aged appearance.

What is “Ozempic Face”?

“Ozempic Face” refers to the sagging, hollow, and aged appearance that can occur after significant weight loss with medications like Ozempic. Common features include:

Hollowed Cheeks and Sunken Eyes: As facial fat depletes, the eyes can appear more deep-set, and the cheeks lose their youthful roundness, resulting in a gaunt look.

Sagging Skin: Without the support of subcutaneous fat, the skin may droop, creating loose, wrinkled areas on the face.

Deeper Facial Lines: Nasolabial folds and marionette lines become more pronounced due to the lack of volume, leading to a more aged appearance.

Jowling: The skin around the lower face may hang over the jawline, creating the appearance of jowls.

Loose Neck Skin: The neck can show creases and banding, losing the sharp, youthful angle that most people desire.

Preventing and Treating Ozempic Face

The good news is that there are several ways to address and even prevent these unwanted facial changes.

Stay Hydrated: Drinking at least 1–2 liters of water daily helps keep the skin plump and hydrated. Dehydration exacerbates skin laxity and makes fine lines more prominent.

Increase Protein Intake: A diet rich in protein supports skin elasticity and muscle integrity, which are crucial for a firm, youthful look.

Invest in Quality Skincare: Medical-grade skincare products can improve skin elasticity and overall texture. Ingredients like retinoids, peptides, and hyaluronic acid are key for boosting collagen and hydration.

Facial Fillers: Injectable fillers can replace facial volume loss, particularly in areas like the cheeks, temples, and jawline. For those experiencing Ozempic Face, fillers may be needed in larger amounts to restore the natural contours.

Skin Tightening Treatments: Non-surgical options, like Ultherapy, can help tighten sagging skin, reducing the appearance of jowls and wrinkles.
